Saïfi calls Karel De Gucht on the risks of unfair competition
As part of a restricted meeting involving members of the EPP INTA and the European Commissioner for Trade, Tokia Saifi (EPP Vice-coordinator / INTA) has expressed concern over trade policy led by Mr De Gucht.

Whether the resumption of EU-Mercosur negotiations or the proposed carbon tax at the border, the European Commissioner "seems to forget the principle of reciprocity and gives the impression of undercut European business interests."

At the meeting, Tokia Saifi was faced with the determination of the Commissioner who does not support the draft carbon tax at the border. She believes that it is unacceptable for the EU countries to make efforts in producing and consuming clean products while they undergo unfair competition from countries producing cheaply since they do not respect the commitments to reduce CO2.
Although some people at the Commission appear to have considered a carbon tax at the border as an option to fight against carbon leakage and the risk of loss of competitiveness, the European Trade Commissioner confirmed that his "style has not changed and his ideas are justified". He also added that "European underestimate the risk of trade war". "The real war that Europe needs to take is that of unfair competition" claimed the Inta-EPP coordinator who hopes that one day the Commissioner will change his idea.
On the EU-Mercosur negotiations, Tokia Saifi drew the attention of the Commissioner on the risk of massive imports of agricultural products from countries not complying with environmental and health standards whereas European countries have to respect strict standards. Indeed, the EU is exposed to a certain risk of environmental dumping and unfair competition.
Toki a Saifi took the opportunity to remind Karel De Gucht that "new agricultural concessions after the offers already made in July 2008 under the Doha Round are not possible." As a member of the Committee on International Trade that will approve or reject the EU-Mercosur FTA, Tokia Saifi has declared that she would oppose to a bilateral agreement that sacrifices European agriculture and may give limited satisfactory progress for the rest of the European economy.
